Meet the WWOOFers

We already gave you a quick insight on the world of WWOOFing in the previous posts. Besides entering and experiencing the farm life, the best thing about WWOOFing is the people that you meet. In this post we introduce the people we met during our voluntary work on a farm in Uddebo, Sweden.

What do you do when you’re not WWOOFing?

“I graduated last month in architecture and will start my master building engineering after the summer.”

Why did you come WWOOFing?

“I came to Denmark for a summer program to learn about energy efficient houses. Once I finished that I thought that I should visit Sweden while I was so near by. I remembered hearing about WWOOFing and wanted to continue learning so decided I would find a host that could teach me something about building timber houses.”

What do you like best about WWOOFing?

“It is interesting to do little things in and around the houses. An architect should surely know how to do all the basic steps concerned with building a house after all.”

What is your life dream?

“Going back to my country. My dream would be to improve my country and maybe influence or help change the way of thinking in my country. I want to build a lot and change the way people live. I would like to design very economic houses for the homeless for example. Yes that’s my goal. But first I want to gain a lot of experience working in other countries.”

What do you do when you’re not WWOOFing?

“I’m a pilates teacher and mother of two boys.”

Why did you come WWOOFing?

“I don’t know really, a sense of adventure I guess.”

What do you like best about WWOOFing?

“I love meeting all the new people. Seeing and experiencing a different way of living in a different house in the middle of nowhere is great. I’m living in a big city with very different weather. It is a lot colder here so acclimatising to that is quite hard for me at the moment.

The good thing about being away from home is that I’ll go back to my own life with new energy. I also now know now how much I enjoy living in a big city. I love all the people around me there. Here I like going to the supermarket because of all the people there!

I love being in the forest here though, its very pretty and you’re alone with nature.”

What is your life dream?

“I don’t think I have big dreams. I might be living my dream life, especially at this moment in time while I’m travelling.”

What do you do when you’re not WWOOFing?

“I’m a sales manager in a multinational company.”

Why did you come WWOOFing?

“Me and my friends were thinking about going WWOOFing this summer because we befriended a couple in Serbia that hosts WWOOFers. We worked with them for a little bit and then we got the idea to use our holiday to go WWOOFing abroad. First we applied to a farm in Holland but we didn’t get a response. Then we applied to two farms in Sweden and now here we are getting some new inspiration and experiences. I would like to do something completely different in my summer holiday to relax my mind. I love meeting all the new people; the hosts and the other WWOOFers. It’s an international team and we’re living here as one family.”

What do you like best about WWOOFing?

“I love learning new things about organic gardening. That fits my way of life.”

What is your life dream?

“I would love to change something in my life. Maybe I would also like to start a farm like this with my friends.”

What do you do when you’re not WWOOFing?

“I work in IT”

Why did you come WWOOFing?

“Well it was actually my friends idea. We started talking about it it two years ago but we didn’t get around to it until now. This year we really wanted to feel how it is to live and work in a different place. It was my proposal to come to Sweden. I came to Sweden several years ago to go fishing and I really loved it here.”

What do you like best about WWOOFing?

“I really love the people we meet here. That really makes the whole experience so great.”

What is your life dream?

“I like my life, so I don’t really have a life dream. I like to change my job after several years to feel a different atmosphere. I do really like that we’re working outside and with our hands over here. It makes me feel a lot healthier than being stuck indoors.”

Why are you a WWOOFer host?

“We were helping a friend who is a WWOOFer host and he recommended us to do the same. We really like meeting all kinds of people from different counties. We learn so much from other people and we also love sharing everything that we ourselves know. The cultural differences between people from various counties is fascinating. It is really interesting to learn how other people prepare and preserve food.

We run quite a busy site here with a large variety of animals such as chickens, pigs, goats, horses, and a few cats and dogs. Next to the animals we have large allotments where we grow all our vegetables and fruit and the surrounding forest trails are full of mushrooms just asking to be picked. So getting a helping hand from WWOOFers is always appreciated.”

What is your life dream?

“To be as self sufficient as possible. I would love to be able to just live off our own land and also to live from everything that the nature around us gives us. Then we also need to make sure we can keep and preserve the produce all year round. And the I would like to create a small farm shop were we sell the food that we don’t need.”
